OurShaala #12 - Palette to Plate
A Celebration of Food through Art
Day 1:
The day commenced with a serene meditation session, allowing participants to reflect on the moments and aspects of their lives they are most grateful for. This introspective start set a positive tone for the activities that followed.
Next, the energy ramped up with an engaging game of charades but with
an educational twist. Two spirited teams competed to guess as many red fruits and vegetables as possible, fostering teamwork and laughter. Charades lead
to the concept of a rainbow on a plate
to understand food and nutrition through color
Following this, the workshop's objectives and structure were introduced. Students from both schools were encouraged to dive into their favorite food memories, exploring these through sensory associations—smell, taste, texture, setting, and the people involved. This creative exercise culminated in the students crafting heartfelt poems while visualizing and weaving their sensory reflections into vivid narratives.
The day concluded with a practical demonstration of creating grid layouts for murals. Using a leveler and chalk line reel, participants learned essential techniques to prepare a wall for mural painting—a skill that would set the foundation for future artistic endeavors.
Day 2:
The meditation on the second day was grounded in understanding one’s own physical existence amidst the serene surroundings. This was followed by a lively game of Pictionary to bridge the gap of communication between the MAIS students and Mathru school students, sparking creativity and friendly competition among the students.
Students then divided into workstations, each buzzing with activity. One group prepped their melamine plates, sketching vivid food memories, while another started marking grids on the wall, laying the groundwork for the upcoming mural. The air was filled with laughter, exploration, and focused energy, resulting in vibrant, eye-catching plate designs and a perfectly gridded wall ready for painting.
Meanwhile, the documentation team diligently captured the day's activities, ensuring every moment was documented. They also began curating a sign language caption video, which will be part of the final project showcase.
To wrap up, students reflected on their experiences by filling out a reflection zine, using creative food jargon to express their thoughts and insights from the day's journey.
Day 3:

Day 3 brought a burst of energy and color as students began painting the mural with vibrant pixel shades of red, yellow, and green—each representing different food experiences: spicy, sweet, and sour. Every student contributed to the wall mural by painting the pixels making it a shared community process.
Simultaneously, others focused intently on completing their food memory designs on the melamine plates, adding intricate details and finishing touches.
The day concluded with an exhilarating treasure hunt, where two teams eagerly searched for the final two colors of the rainbow. Their quest led them to discover informational cards featuring fruits and vegetables corresponding to those colors, adding a fun and educational twist to the adventure. The winning team, celebrating their triumph after three days of friendly competition, enjoyed the culmination of their efforts. Their collective rewards included informational cards about various colored fruits and vegetables. These cards will serve as key resources for creating educational posters on Day 4, which will be displayed in the Mathru dining hall.
Day 4:

The last working day of the community-engaged art workshop began with a collective effort to complete the wall mural. As a group of students applied a second coat of paint and added final touches, bringing the vibrant artwork to life, the rest of the students were divided into six groups, each focusing on a specific color of food — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and white, their task being to create educational food posters. Each group collaged on a Tangram human figure using fruits and vegetables of their assigned color onto a 3x4foot canvas. Fun facts and nutritional values about the featured food were incorporated - resulting in a series of bright, informative posters. These colorful creations were proudly hung in the Mathru dining hall, transforming the space with vibrant art and valuable insights.
The day concluded with the documentation and display of the students' painted plates, which were carefully arranged on the walls, celebrating their creativity and the memories they captured.

Conclusion:

The workshop week at the Mathru campus was a vibrant celebration of collaboration, creativity, and learning. Over five days, students from Mallya Aditi International School (MAIS) and Mathru School for the Deaf came together to explore the intersection of art, food, and community. Through activities like sensory storytelling, mural painting, and food-inspired art on melamine plates, students transformed personal memories into powerful visual expressions. The dining hall, now a hub of colorful murals, educational posters, and meaningful art, stood as a testament to the students' creativity and teamwork. The workshop bridged the gap between communities, leaving an indelible impact on all participants and underscoring the power of art as a tool for connection.
